Accessibility and ways to use the map
Use the place picker, keyboard controls and written comparisons when a small outline or drag gesture is difficult. The site provides text alongside visual map results.
Find a place without clicking its outline
The Find a place control lists countries and regions by continent and includes a search filter. It is useful for small islands as well as keyboard navigation. Selecting a place opens the same details as clicking its map outline. Escape closes the picker, and focus returns to the control that opened it.
The selected-place panel supplies a written area estimate and a capital name when available. The comparison articles include text and numeric results, so a reader does not need to infer the answer from color or shape alone.
Keyboard and alternative controls
Use Tab to move among controls and Enter or Space to activate buttons. Projection and basemap buttons expose their selected state. Zoom buttons provide an alternative to the mouse wheel, and the settings panel offers buttons and a slider for the central meridian.
Focus mode provides a larger map workspace. Escape exits it. When the map workspace has focus, plus and minus adjust zoom and left or right adjusts the central meridian. A movable country copy can be focused and moved with arrow keys as an alternative to dragging. Inputs keep their ordinary typing behavior.
Reading and motion
The layout responds to narrow screens and browser text zoom. A skip link moves past the site navigation. Content links and standard downloads remain available without JavaScript; interactive map changes and custom exports require it. The site respects the reduced-motion preference for decorative transitions.
These features describe the implementation’s intended access routes. They do not constitute a claim of certified conformance or complete assistive-technology testing. Real combinations of browser, device and assistive software can expose problems that automated checks miss.
