Natural Earth’s terms place its raster and vector datasets in the public domain. Attribution is appreciated by this project for traceability; we do not describe it as a condition imposed by Natural Earth. Data processing and source hashes are recorded in the repository.

The maps on this site are generated from these datasets. They are not copied from the Equal Earth authors’ finished wall-map artwork. A finished map obtained from another website may have its own terms, even if its geographic data are public domain.

Projection references

Equal Earth’s authors are Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny. Their original paper is the primary reference for the projection. The history page distinguishes its online publication in 2018 from the journal volume dated 2019.

The site’s projection explanations also cite PROJ, D3 and relevant author or software documentation. A documentation link supports the property or implementation described beside it; it does not grant permission to copy an unrelated illustration.

The license shown beside a download applies to that original composition. Custom SVGs retain a render specification and license statement in their metadata. The original editorial text is attributed to Equal Earth Lab, with AI-assisted drafting disclosed in the editorial policy.

If the available terms do not answer your intended reuse, contact the publisher through Contact. We do not assume that a missing license amounts to permission, or that a source citation transfers rights to third-party artwork.

Software and flag assets

The implementation uses Astro, React, D3, MapLibre GL JS and other open-source packages, with pinned versions and their license notices. Country flags are served locally from the flag-icons package; its license notice is included with those assets. These dependencies have their own licenses, separate from the site’s prose.

Verify a particular result

The methodology identifies the Earth model, dataset and comparison scopes. Standard downloads include file dimensions, byte sizes and hashes. For a correction, cite the page and the specific claim or file rather than only the site’s name. The corrections guide explains what to include.
