Choose a projection by what you need to show

Start with the comparison your reader should make. Area, local angle and overall appearance are different priorities; a useful projection makes the right one dependable.

First write the question your map answers

“Which continent covers more area?” calls for an equal-area view. “What is the bearing of this route?” calls for different geometry. “Where are these countries?” may need a readable overview without an exact measurement claim. Choosing a projection before naming the task can leave the picture working against the message.

This site offers three projections with distinct properties. Equal Earth preserves relative area. Mercator preserves local angles on its mathematical surface and draws constant-bearing routes as straight lines. Robinson balances the appearance of the whole world without exactly preserving area or local angles. The references for Equal Earth, Mercator and Robinson explain those properties in more detail.

These are starting points for the three choices here, not a ranking of every projection in cartography. A project with a specific polar, national or engineering focus may need a coordinate system outside this site’s scope.

Area is a strong reason to choose Equal Earth

When the size of a colored region carries meaning, changing its footprint can change the message. On Equal Earth, a region covering twice the geographic area of another receives twice its map area at the same scale. Shapes may change, but the area comparison survives.

That guarantee does not make every statistical map accurate. Suppose two countries have the same total population but different areas. A map colored by total population and a map colored by population density answer different questions. Neither the projection nor the color palette can decide which question you meant.

For an outline comparison, a shared scale is essential. Two independent pictures can each fill their frame, making a small country look as large as a big one. Our selected country comparisons use the same equal-area scale for both silhouettes and report the ratio from their underlying geometry.

Check the cut, orientation and labels

After selecting a projection, choose the central meridian. This changes the longitude at the middle and moves the map’s cut to the opposite side. A Pacific view can keep ocean connections together while separating land elsewhere. A Greenwich-centered view makes a different trade-off.

North-up and south-up are orientation choices, not different projections. Turning an Equal Earth map upside down keeps its area property. The next question is whether your audience can locate the places and interpret the labels. Include an orientation cue if the composition could be mistaken for the familiar view.

Small islands and closely spaced countries are difficult to label on any whole-world map. Enlarging a label may require omitting another label. Changing projections does not create enough room to show every place name at a readable size.

Build the final composition

In Make a map, begin with a labeled or blank world template. Choose Atlas for a quiet flat-color background, or Physical relief when terrain is part of the explanation. Relief is a visual layer; it does not change the projection’s area or angle properties.

Use the comparison template to present two projections, and explain that the frames fit independently. Export PNG for straightforward placement in documents or SVG when your editor supports it. Keep the image’s aspect ratio when resizing, then check the result at its actual reading size rather than only at full-screen zoom.
